Lower back pain is the leading cause of years living with disability and remains a significant global public health concern. Low back pain in 2017 was estimated to be about 7.5% of the global population, affecting around 577.0 million people worldwide.
Due to the complex nature of the anatomy and biomechanics of the back and spine, the cause of LBP is varied and often poorly diagnosed. It has been suggested that between 70%-97% of LBP are diagnosed as “non-specific” or “miscellaneous” where the aetiology remains unknown. The reason for this is believed to be a result of poor diagnosis and limited expertise of the clinician.
