Lateral ankle sprain

The incidence of lateral ankle sprain is extremely common, particularly in sports related activities where 85% of ankle sprains result from an inversion injury. Following a lateral ankle sprain unless the correct treatment is applied, reoccurrence can take place.  The rate of reoccurrence is reported to be as high as 80%. This percentage rate is quite high; however, it is believed that the cause of reoccurrence is through poor management of lateral ankle sprain, which eventually leads to mechanical ankle instability, functional ankle instability, and eventually to chronic ankle instability.

  

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the ankle joint complex, its supporting structures, biomechanical function during gait, and how lower limb kinematics is affected following an ankle injury. This will allow you to effectively target your acupuncture treatment to restore ankle joint function thereby preventing the onset of functional or chronic ankle instability.

 

What will I learn? 

On completion of the course you will

  • Understand the nature of ankle sprains and reoccurring ankle injury. 
  • Understand how damage to the common peroneal, tibial and articular nerves affect recovery of the ankle joint complex and how it may lead to functional ankle instability and chronic ankle instability.
  • Have evidence-based knowledge of the function of the supporting muscles of the ankle joint complex during gait and how deficit in the muscles will lead to reoccurring ankle sprain.
  • Understand the effect of effusion on ankle joint function and recovery.
  • Have an evidence-based understanding of the most effective strength training protocol to enhance joint proprioception and muscle strength.
  • Have an evidence-based knowledge of the most effective orthotic device to apply during rehabilitation.
  • Have an evidence-based knowledge of the most effective acupuncture points to use to reduce swelling, restore muscle strength, enhance tissue repair and joint proprioception.
