Acupuncture for acute and chronic pain

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. There are several factors that will exacerbate pain such as anger, fear, sleep quality, anxiety and attention to pain. The purpose of this module is to develop your understanding of the pain pathway and the perception and regulation of pain by the CNS. To develop an understanding of key areas of the brain that regulates the sensation of pain and key acupuncture points that will have a direct effect on these areas of the brain. To improve your acupoint selection and needling technique in the management of chronic and acute pain. The NICE guidelines will be reviewed regarding the recommendation of acupuncture in the management of painful disorders.

Management of temporomandibular (TMJ) disorder with acupuncture

1:6 people will have signs and symptoms of TMJ which affect people 20-50yrs of age but can affect any age group. The cause of TMJ disorders varies from one individual to another and can be multifactorial in its nature. The acupuncture CPD update will build your understanding of aetiology, signs and symptoms and how to formulate an effective acupuncture treatment plan for the management of TMJ disorders.

Acupuncture for the management of headaches

Headaches are common disabling disorders that affect a large proportion of the population daily. Acupuncture is an effective treatment modality for the management of headaches and has been shown to be equal to or better than medication. The acupuncture CPD update will allow you to understand the patterns of headaches, and headache classifications in accordance with national guidelines. A critical understanding of the current evidence to support the use of acupuncture for tension-type headaches and migraine prophylaxis will be discussed before building your understanding of how to formulate an acupuncture treatment plan based on headache patterns.

Acupuncture for acute and chronic lower back pain

Lower back pain is the leading cause of years living with disability and remains a significant global public health concern. Low back pain in 2017 was estimated to be about 7.5% of the global population, affecting around 577.0 million people worldwide.

Due to the complex nature of the anatomy and biomechanics of the back and spine, the cause of LBP is varied and often poorly diagnosed. It has been suggested that between 70%-97% of LBP are diagnosed as “non-specific” or “miscellaneous” where the aetiology remains unknown. The reason for this is believed to be a result of poor diagnosis and limited expertise of the clinician.

This module starts by introducing you to the causes of acute and chronic low back pain before going through a step-by-step examination of the low back. This will give you greater understanding as to what may be causing back pain and will allow you to select effective acupuncture points based on your findings.

Aim:

To enhance your knowledge and understanding of the use of acupuncture in the management of headaches, TMJ, acute and chronic lower back pain, chronic pain and plantar fasciitis.
