Postgraduate Certificate in Acupuncture for Women’s Health Disorders

Course overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Acupuncture for Women’s Health Disorders supports development in managing a range of reproductive and sexual health conditions, aiming to raise awareness and improve treatment outcomes in women’s health globally. The curriculum emphasises patient-centred care, evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and professional empathy. The course is self-paced and designed to be flexible, with no fixed lecture times as they are presented through video lectures online to allow student to watch at their convenience. There are two practical workshops to accompany and reinforce the theoretical presentation online. The certificate provides education to enhance clinical knowledge and leadership in women’s health, as validated by the CPD Standards Office. The programme covers principles including anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system, health and safety of acupuncture, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based care, with a focus on acupuncture treatments for pelvic health issues such as endometriosis, pelvic girdle pain, menopausal symptoms, overactive bladder, and infertility.

What will I learn in this course?

The course aims to provide knowledge and skills in delivering safe, effective, and targeted acupuncture treatments.

  • Menstrual Problems

This course provides an evidence-based overview of acupuncture's role in managing menstrual disorders. Participants will examine how acupuncture can support menstrual cycle regulation and help alleviate symptoms, including dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, and amenorrhea, as well as associated concerns such as abdominal pain, headache, acne, mood changes, anxiety, and depression. Special emphasis is placed on endometriosis, with attention to acupuncture’s potential effects on lesion size reduction and hormonal system regulation relevant to menstruation and disease progression. The curriculum reviews studies indicating that acupuncture may assist in addressing hormonal imbalance conditions, such as irregular periods or mood disturbances. Content includes discussion of acupuncture's impact on the endocrine system, focusing on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its pivotal role in hormone regulation. Participants will learn techniques to use acupuncture for modulation of hormone levels, including cortisol, oestrogen, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, and thyroid hormones, and how targeting the hypothalamus-pituitary ovarian axis can contribute to improved menstrual cycles, ovulation, and symptom relief for conditions such as endometriosis.

  • Infertility

The programme discusses current research suggesting that acupuncture may enhance blood flow to reproductive organs and support uterine wall development. Learners will study the selection of optimal acupuncture points for neurotransmitter mediation and stimulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion, impacting menstrual cycles, ovulation, and overall fertility. Instruction also covers approaches to using body and auricular acupuncture to lower stress hormone levels and promote patient relaxation, which is considered beneficial for fertility, particularly among women undergoing IVF treatment.

  • Menopause problems

Participants are introduced to investigations into acupuncture as an alternative therapeutic option for menopause-related symptoms. The course explores its reported efficacy in alleviating hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, emotional fluctuations, anxiety, depression, and mood swings. Methods for addressing multiple menopausal symptoms via acupuncture to potentially improve quality of life are detailed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will have an improved understanding of acupuncture for women’s health conditions and refined needling techniques and clinical reasoning. Participants will learn to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system.

  • Understand the physiological nature of endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, hot flushes, hormone imbalances and infertility.

  • Understand the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture in the management of a range of women’s health issues.

  • Apply acupuncture techniques to address pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PPGP), hot flushes, overactive bladder, dyspareunia, nausea, and vomiting.

  • Expanding expertise by exploring specialised topics in depth based on previous studies.

  • Recognise and manage contraindications, precautions, and potential adverse events, especially during pregnancy, to ensure safe practice.

Course requirement and assessments

  • Course Assessment

Following each module, a multi-choice quiz is provided to assess the content of the course; a minimum score of 70% is required to progress. Participants who do not pass may re-evaluate the course materials and retake the assessment. A certificate of completion accredited by the CPD Standards Office is awarded once all course material is completed and marked.
